sysmex KX21N HEMATOLOGY ANALYSER

Sysmex Corporation (HQ: Kobe, Japan; President: Hisashi Ietsugu) announced today the launch of its automated hematology analyzer XE-5000 ("XE-5000") in Europe as the new model of the XE Series, which is its main product line. The XE-5000 not only incorporates software for measuring immature cells*1 as a basic feature, but also has a new feature enabling it to measure low concentrations of blood cells in body fluids, thus meeting a wide range of customer needs, from screening to more specialized testing. The XE-5000 will be marketed in many regions worldwide such as U.S., starting with Europe in February 2007.
A hematology (blood cell count) test is performed to determine the number of red blood cells and leukocytes in the blood, to distinguish immature cells (which normally do not appear in blood) from normal blood cells present in the blood, and to count them. Conventionally, immature cells are detected primarily by microscopy, but automatic testing devices are being developed using recent technological innovations.
Sysmex has developed various techniques and marketed many products in the hematology field since its foundation. In 1999, we brought the automated hematology analyzer XE-2100 to the market as our flag-ship model, and have continued to provide tests with added value, such as networking function, improved test quality, and analytical technology for immature cells, to meet the diverse needs of our customers. In addition to the basic functions of the XE-2100 necessary for automatic, efficient, and effortless screening (tests to distinguish abnormal from normal cells), we have developed software for more specialized tests, including detection and measurement of immature cells, and have provided these as optional products.
The XE-5000, which we are introducing to the market, integrates the hematology testing technology that we have developed to date. It is the first device in this industry that incorporates software for the measurement of immature cells as a standard function with a high demand in overseas market, and is capable of performing highly specialized tests. The software allows counting of immature cells as well as red blood cells and leukocytes in the blood and, thus, makes the XE-5000 useful for the diagnosis of diseases such as leukocyte, erythrocyte and thrombocyte lineage as well as for stem cell transplantation for the treatment of leukemia and other diseases. These valuable test items support disease management as well as screening, and allow for more specialized investigations.
Furthermore, the addition of the ability to measure low concentrations of blood cells in body fluids means that there is now a fully automatic measurement technique available to replace a process that currently takes 60 minutes by microscopy with a two-minute automated process. Blood cell counting in body fluids*2 is performed in addition to routine blood tests in patients who may have diseases such as meningitis. XE-5000 saves testing time and labor, including pretreatment, and is also useful in emergency medicine situations.
Sysmex will continue to develop products that meet the patients' needs, and we will expand our horizons from screening to the new field of disease management, providing optimal medical care to individual patients, and contributing to improvements in patient QOL*3.
Name: Automated hematology analyzer XE-5000
Target markets: Overseas market
Launch (scheduled): To be released, initially in Europe in February 2007.
*Marketing planning in other regions is now being created.
Features:
- Incorporating software for the measurement of immature cells as standard functions.
- The function of measuring low concentrations of blood cells in body fluids has been added.
* The measurement items and software mentioned in the text and notes below include those not sold in some regions.

*1: Software for the measurement of immature cells
 -  XE IG master: Quantification of immature granulocytes
 -  XE HPC master: Detection of hematopoietic precursor cells
 -  XE IPF master: Calculation of the percentage of immature platelets
 -  XE RET master: Calculation of the reticulocyte hemoglobin level

*2: Body fluids
 -  Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF): Fluid that circulates through the space surrounding the spinal cord and brain.
 -  Pleural fluid: Fluid retained around the lungs.
 -  Peritoneal fluid: Fluid retained in the abdominal cavity.
 -  Synovial fluid: Mucus that lubricates joint movements.
*3: Quality of life (QOL)
Quality of life is defined as the degree to which the person lives a satisfactory life while retaining their human dignity. It has recently become important to provide more patient-oriented medical care, so that following treatment, patients are able to restore their vital energy inherent in the body and lead a more comfortable life.
